AWARENESS OF WATER WASTAGE

Water is essential to our daily lives, and plays many important roles in our bodies such as regulating body temperature and transporting or carrying nutrients in our bodies.

Did you know that the earth is a watery place, and 71 percent of the earth is covered by water? So, it’s our responsibility to take care of water to make our planet a better place. This is because without water there is way we can survive!

Causes of water wastage

Today, there are many ways in which we waste water without realising . For instance;

(1) Taking long showers: Every day we take showers whether long or short showers. But did you know that taking long showers without using a low flow shower head, is a form of water wastage? So, it’s good to reduce showering time . Using a low flow shower head can save more water than we think.

(2) Not consistently checking and repairing leaking pipes inside and outside our houses , such as washrooms, kitchens e.tc can cause more water wastage without knowing.

(3) Not sheathing or using a pool cover which helps in reducing water that can be lost through evaporation. And this is some of the ways we waste water without knowing or realising.

(4) Leaving the tap running when washing utensils is also a form of wasting water. So, it’s good to close the tap while washing utensils or conducting house chores.

(5) Letting the water run when brushing your teeth or shaving. Most of the time, we leave the tap running when brushing our teeth and this can cause water wastage.


Ways of reducing water wastage

After understanding causes of water wastage, it’s our responsibility to take care and step forward to conserve the water that we have instead of using it haphazardly.

There are many ways that we can reduce water wastage;

(1) checking the leaking pipes within and outside our houses: we have to be very careful and consistently looking if there is leaking pipes within and outside our houses. And what will help us to know that, there is a leaking pipe in our houses is by checking our water bills from time to time. If you realise that your water bill is going up or increasing every time, then there might be leaking of pipes somewhere whether inside or outside your house. So it’s good to check the leaking pipes for us to reduce water wastage.

(2) close taps when brushing: Most of the time when we brush our teeth, we normally leave the tap running. And in this way we are wasting water! So, to reduce this wastage we have to turn off the taps when brushing our teeth. And we have to make sure that, we don’t have any leaky sink in our homes in order to reduce water wastage.

(3) Reusing water: Instead of pouring water every time we can reuse it if possible. For instance, the water we use in our kitchens to wash or clean vegetables, instead of pouring we can use for irrigation such as watering kitchen gardens in our homes.

(4) Taking shorter time when showering: By taking shorter time when showering, we can reduce water wastage. Another way we can reduce water wastage when showering is by using a low-flow shower head.

(5) sharing knowledge: Another good way we can reduce water wastage is by sharing our knowledge about water wastage with our neighbours. Maybe some of our neighbours don’t know some of the causes of water wastage in our homes without realising. So, it’s good for us who has some knowledge about water wastage to share with our neighbours . Remember that sharing is caring.
